BB's Coffee & Muffins opens new store in Clonmel

After being made redundant at the end of March Julian Smith was left with the decision to move overseas or look at becoming his own boss. Together with his wife Susan they looked into the franchise market in Ireland and decided to take the plunge.

Through his previous role Julian had done business with BB's Coffee & Muffins and established both a relationship and rapport with the relevant personnel over a number of years. " We felt BB's was a strong brand with a clear identity and this was important to us in getting a new venture up and running quickly, whilst minimizing the risk of trying to establish a brand from scratch in this current market", Julian says.

Both Julian and Susan have a marketing background and strong commercial experience including building retail outlets and start-up experience from time spent in the Middle East. "Whilst we had no specific experience of the food/catering industry we recognised the importance of high standards, and since we were in essence buying into a brand the importance of protecting that image in every way possible from shop fit to service levels is a key motivating factor" he adds.

Julian and Susans next step was to familiarise themselves with the day to day running of a  BB's cafe. "It was a pre-requisite of the franchise that we spent time in BB's academy learning about the overall business. This included time in store and on-going training to help us open and get more proficient at all aspects of the operation. Throughout this BB's team were there to support us", Julian says.

"Starting a BB's is not for the faint hearted and it would be useful to have a good commercial and operational background to fully understand all aspects of the business. Location and footfall is the key and we have been very lucky in where we are located. We find the new extended menu format is very strong in differentiating BB's from the competition and in doing so sets BB's apart from the market", he adds.

Looking towards the future, Julian sees growth but at a steady pace. "We have discussed with BB's the possibility of doing more stores with them, however for now the focus is very much on securing the reputation and revenue for BB's in Clonmel for the foreseeable future".
